POSITION SUMMARY

Pay range: $49.34/hr - $74.08/hr

The intended start date is December 1st, 2025. *Note that this date may be adjusted based on operational needs.

Each RN Fellow is responsible for delivering safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care to individuals, families, communities, and patient populations while developing proficiency in their new specialty area. RN Fellows receive personalized mentorship, advanced skills training, and ongoing professional support within a collaborative team environment. Care delivery aligns with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics, as well as the standards of professional practice for the specialty. Professional accountability and engagement enrich the RN Fellow’s development as a leader and advocate for interprofessional collaboration, innovative practice, and life-long learning.  Contributes to a positive work environment that promotes HMC values.

 

Clinical Practice. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care consistent with hospital policies, professional scope, and evidence-based best practices.
  • Use evidence-based decision-making to determine patient priorities, goals, and interventions; adapt care plans as patient needs evolve.
  • Provide holistic, patient-centered care to mothers throughout antepartum, intrapartum, delivery, and recovery periods.
  • Perform comprehensive maternal triage and continuous fetal/maternal monitoring for preterm labor, active labor, pregnancy complications, and other medical concerns to ensure safety and optimal outcomes.
  • Manage patients in active labor as part of the interdisciplinary team, including induction assistance, medication administration, pain management, labor support, and patient education.
  • Assist with cesarean sections and other obstetric surgical procedures, functioning as the circulating RN in the operating room.
  • Conduct newborn assessments and provide immediate postnatal and breastfeeding support in alignment with the Baby Friendly Initiative.
  • Assess and address the psychosocial and educational needs of patients and families, offering compassionate support during all outcomes, including fetal loss.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record per organizational standards.

Self-Assessment and Professional Growth. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate own knowledge, clinical skills, and practice in relation to professional standards and fellowship learning objectives.
  • Identify strengths and development needs; set measurable professional goals.
  • Integrate previous nursing experience into the specialty learning plan.
  • Engage in structured, self-guided, and clinical learning activities; apply new knowledge to practice.

Patient Safety and Advocacy. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Protect and promote patient safety, health, and rights.
  • Keep the patient central when exercising judgment, seeking consultation, or delegating tasks.
  • Advocate for patients by involving them, their families, and caregivers in planning and evaluating care.
  • Deliver care that respects autonomy, privacy, confidentiality, and cultural preferences.

Quality Improvement and Evidence Integration. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor patient outcomes against quality benchmarks.
  • Participate in data collection, analysis, and evidence-based performance improvement or research projects.
  • Contribute to innovation and advancement of quality maternal and neonatal care practices.

Teamwork and Professional Collaboration. Representative duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate closely with leadership teams, physicians or midwives, lactation consultants, NICU nurses, and other interdisciplinary staff to coordinate care.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive learning environment.
  • Recognize colleagues’ strengths and provide constructive feedback.
  • Delegate and supervise care tasks consistent with team members’ scope and regulatory standards.
  • Promote teamwork, collaboration, and healthy professional relationships.
  • Model self-care and professional well-being.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, Licenses & Certifications

Required: 

  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • One (1) year postpartum nursing within the last five (5) years; or two (2) years of critical care or emergency department nursing experience.
  • Current Licensure as registered nurse by the Oregon State Board of Nursing
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required within six (6) months of hire.
  • T.A.B.L.E certification required within six (6) months of hire
  • AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring required within six (6) months of hire

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing
  • Three (3) or more years of nursing experience
  • Senior nursing practicum in Labor and Delivery

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Maintains knowledge of and compliance with all applicable governmental and regulatory rules and standards.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of specialty procedures, instrumentation, and equipment, applying best practices.
  • HIPAA compliance and safeguards patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to policies regarding disposal of hazardous waste, sharps handling, and personal protective equipment.
  • Understanding of electronic Health Records (EHR) Systems and office equipment and software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite, scheduling software).
  • Demonstrates high level of technical proficiency with equipment and instrumentation used for specialty procedures.

Skill in:

  • Effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Time management, prioritization, attention to detail, and multitasking.
  • Speaking, writing and communicating clearly in English to ensure safe and effective patient care.

Ability to:

  • Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating professionalism and empathy in all interactions.
  • Utilize critical thinking and a structured problem-solving approach to guide decisions related to patient care and unit activity.
  • Perform or delegate independent nursing functions appropriately in accordance with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in using the hospital’s Electronic Medical Records system.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Collaborate effectively with healthcare team members.
  • Adjust to changing priorities and work demands.
