The Surgical Technologist participates as part of the surgical team in assisting nursing staff in support services necessary for safe and efficient care of patients within various areas of surgical services. This individual assists at the surgical field passing instruments and supplies to other members of the surgical team and maintains the sterile file. Participates in acquiring, preparing and equipping the surgical suites. Ensures the delivery of quality care for patients undergoing surgical procedures in accordance with individual needs, standards of care, and hospital policy. Assists in non-surgical patient intervention under the direct supervision of a physician or RN. May serve as a Core Technician, with responsibility for maintaining sterile technique and providing supplies and instruments as requested. Added job functions may include responsible for the coordination of activities in designated specialty area to include staff education, inventory, vendor management and effective physician relationships, birth certificate or other administrative duties.
a) Certification: Must hold and maintain a national Surgical Technologist Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants or at director’s discretion or designee provide documentation of employment as a surgical technologist in a health care facility during at least two of the three years immediately preceding January 1, 2017 (must also earn 16 hours of continuing education every two years).
b) Certification: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS preferred upon hire, and required within 90 days of hire.
c) Minimum of one year operating room experience preferred.
d) Membership in appropriate professional organization, preferred.
e) Demonstrates knowledge of rules/regulations established by governmental and regulatory agencies.
f) Demonstrates proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee's particular job.
g) Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
h) Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
i) Bilingual skills a plus.
