The Music Therapist coordinates and provides clinical programs and services to patients with a wide variety of diagnoses and disabilities in the acute Geriatric Psychiatric unit. Develops programs to promote and contribute to the rehabilitation effort and to provide the patient and family/caregivers with the skills and resources necessary for successful communication/leisure reintegration after discharge. Works directly with clinical programming and nursing department staff, ancillary personnel, and physicians. Communicates with patients, families/caregivers, other health care workers and various community contacts. Performs all duties in a manner which promotes team concept and reflects the hospital’s mission and philosophy.
a) Education: Bachelors degree from accredited college/university with a major in Therapeutic Recreation, Music Therapy, or related field required.
b) Certification: American Music Therapy Association or National Council for Therapeutic Recreation certification required.
American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS preferred upon hire, and required within 90 days of hire. If not American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certified upon hire, must have current BLS certification through another provider
c) Knowledge of currently accepted Therapeutic Recreation, Music Therapy or related field theory and practice, and associated legal and ethical issues.
d) Solid communication, organization, and problem solving skills.
e) Knowledge of program development and budget planning processes.
f) Familiarity with various recreation/music therapy treatment techniques and media.
g) Ability to use computerized documentation, e-mail software programs.
h) Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, and questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
j) SECURE training within 30 days of hire
k) Music Therapist Board Certification preferred.
l) Bilingual skills a plus.
