Summary of Duties

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is the executive leader responsible for upholding excellence in the provision of nursing care through development and implementation of the Profession Practice Model and nursing’s philosophy, vision, and strategic direction. The CNO is a Registered Nurse (RN) who is accountable for operational leadership, human resource management, financial control, and quality improvement for nursing within the entity. The CNO establishes an environment of professional nursing practice that empowers nurses to provide safe, effective, efficient and compassionate.


The CNO champions initiatives that improve care and protect patients, including monitoring and reporting quality and safety data, and maintaining regulatory and accreditation standards. The CNO maintains a high level of communication and productive relationships with the intra-professional team. The CNO serves as a catalyst for change within the organization


Formulates nursing’s vision and strategic plan in alignment with the organizational strategic plan and vision.

Drives organizational priorities to include nursing sensitive indicators, and alignment with nursing’s foundational standards of practice.


Responsible for nursing practice throughout the facility operations.  Collaborate with nursing leadership at OHSU, Adventist Portland and other system affiliates to advance the practice of nursing and to assure that a standard of excellence for patient care, commensurate with the goals and philosophy of the hospital, is provided to patients.  Administrative dyad liaison to CMO and medical staff / committees. Manages Corporate Clinical Policies and education affiliation agreements for the organization.

Hiring Competencies

a.     Education: Master’s degree in Nursing, or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a Master’s degree in Healthcare or Business Administration or Health Sciences.  A copy of your highest academic diploma or transcript required upon hire.

b.     License:  Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Oregon is required.

c.     Minimum 10 years of nursing experience; Inpatient nursing experience preferred.

d.     7+ years progressive leadership experience in an acute care hospital/ healthcare system.  Preference for candidates with 5+ of those leadership years at the Nursing Director level.

e.     Demonstrates proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job. Presents professional image, approachable and visibly present at the staff level as well as executive level.

f.      Demonstrates ability to appropriately manage organization resources that include human resources, and operations.

g.     Experience working in a labor union environment and familiarity with nurse staffing laws required.

h.     Role model of excellent communication skills that demonstrate positive conflict management and facilitation skills.  Demonstrates and encourages collaborative problem-solving that produces engagement and involvement at the department and individual level. 

i.      Knowledge and ability to utilize a personal computer, for spread sheet and data analysis, and communications (including internet/e-mail experience).

j.      Demonstrates financial management skills including budgeting and understanding/interpreting financial statements.

k.     Possesses knowledge of current concepts of nursing and medical practices and current concepts of leadership, management and quality improvement.

l.      Bilingual skills a plus.
