  • Summary of Duties

    The Break/Lunch Team Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care within the nursing units; coordinates care planning and implementation with other disciplines, for the adolescent, adult and older adult (geriatric) patient. 

    The Break/Lunch Team Nurse servicing the nursing departments, as a professional practitioner, assumes responsibility and accountability for the application of the nursing process and the delivery of patient care while relieving other licensed nurses during break/meal periods. According to the established standards of nursing practice and standards of care, the nurse needs to demonstrate an ability to make clinical nursing judgement in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrating critical thinking and performance ability in the coordination of patient care and consistently performs according to the standards of the profession. The Break/Lunch Team Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of skilled, high quality patient care; for assisting in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating nursing practice and collaborating with members of the healthcare team.



    • Works closely with hospital supervisor and unit charge nurses to identify where resources will be needed.
    • Reviews departmental lunch plans and prioritizes based on department resources and patient needs.
    • Provide break and meal coverage to departments based on the department plan for that shift.
    • When not engaged in meal and rest break relief will be available for acute care assignments as needed, serving as a resource to the nursing departments, assisting with nursing care as needed and identified through regular rounds as directed by the hospital supervisor.
    • Maintain clinical competency in nursing departments to the extent needed to provide break and meal relief and assist with general tasks.
    • Maintains current tracking sheet of procedures, admits, discharges, lunch relief provided on each unit for that shift.
    • Completes compliance audits as assigned by nurse leader, relief charge, and or manager. 


    Hiring Competencies

    a)    Education:  BSN preferred.  A copy of your highest science-related academic diploma or transcript required upon hire.

    b)    License:  Current license as a registered nurse by the Oregon State Board of Nursing required.

    c)    Certifications:

    For all areas: Certification in field of specialty/discipline (refer to policy N-12U) or Nursing Leadership preferred within a year of hire.

    Women’s Services/Birth Center: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required upon hire.  Neonatal Resuscitation preferred upon hire and required within 90 days of hire.

    Medical Surgical, Critical Care, Cath Lab, and GI: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required upon hire.  American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS preferred upon hire, and required within 90 days of hire.

    ED: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS preferred upon hire, and required within 90 days of hire.  PALS or ENPC preferred upon hire and required within 90 days of hire.  TNCC preferred.

    Center for Geriatric Psychiatry: Horizon SECURE training required upon hire.

    Day Surgery: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required upon hire.  ACLS  and PALS within 90 days of hire.

    Operating Room:  American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required upon hire.

    d)    Minimum of 2 years nursing experience required.  Management experience preferred.

    e)    Experience with quality improvement; developing initiatives, monitoring clinical care

    f)     Demonstrates effective written, communication and interpersonal skills – body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing and questions, and applies them to change management, team building, and facilitation of team effectiveness.

    g)    Possesses knowledge of current concepts of nursing and medical practices, and skills necessary in providing appropriate care for patients unique needs based upon age, culture, ethnicity and belief systems.

    h)    Exhibits effective conflict resolution skills and strong collaborative skills in daily interactions and decision-making.

    i)     Demonstrates ability to use a personal computer efficiently.

    j)     Must be able to function effectively and professionally in high stress and critical situations.

    k)    Bilingual skills a plus.
