Why Would One Want to Practice in Oregon?
Oregon is a highly appealing state in which to practice nurse-midwifery. Beyond the geographic benefit that Portland is 75 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 75 miles west of the Cascade mountain range, the nurse-midwifery profession has a long-term, strong, foothold in maternity, gynecologic, and reproductive care here. Nurse-midwives attend almost 20% of the births in the Portland metropolitan area. They are employed in almost every hospital in the area. The home birth community has a strong presence in Portland. Nurse-midwives in Oregon are licensed, independent nurse-practitioners who have prescriptive authority.
    What sets us Apart?

The OHSU Nurse-Midwives are one of the longest established midwifery services in the area. They have been recognized  continually as a National Best Practice by American College of Nurse-Midwives for the Triple Aim Achievement Award.
“Triple Aim” Best Practice recognizes practices which meet the Institute for Healthcare Improvement “Triple Aim” of improving the patient experience, reducing cost of care, and improving the health of populations.
    OHSU Nurse-Midwives Believe in:

    • Providing compassionate, respectful and family-centered care.
    • Promoting healthy living and illness prevention.
    • Providing care that honors the normal process of birth.
    • Developing a partnership with you and sharing information that helps you make informed decisions.
