POSITION SUMMARY

Pay range: $26.53/hr - $37.68/hr

 

Healthcare Instructor I is a certified and/or licensed professional who teaches one or more in-person instructional certification programs and/or healthcare classes at Hillsboro Medical Center. Healthcare regulatory classes provided internally and externally through Hillsboro Medical Center include, but not limited to; American Heart Association certification courses; (BLS Provider, BLS Heartcode Provider, BLS Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED Provider, Workplace Violence prevention certification courses and/or de-escalation courses such as; Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) and other healthcare related topics. Instructors follows current best practice guidelines within their field, specialty, or program of expertise and assure programs are consistent with organizational or clinical department goals and objectives to coordinate educational events and assist the organization in meeting state, federal and other regulatory education requirements.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performed majority of the time:

·       Instructs AHA-BLS courses in English and/or Spanish or ESL.

·       Provides first aid training classes to support Salud community outreach for low-income, medically underserved populations as well as the migrant and seasonal farmworker populations.

·       Stores equipment, sets-up classroom and breaks down classroom and provides transportation of training equipment at training location.

·       Maintains sanitation of class simulation equipment according to CDC guidelines.

·       Completes/prints class rosters and submits participation statistics, attendance sheets, quizzes, tests and score to ECC Certification Coordinator to complete e-card processing.

·       Distributes class materials and supplies to participants.

·       Completes course topics/areas in allotted time.

·       Evaluates and adjusts CPR teaching technique to the style of learning for each class, including modifications for adolescent, adult and ESL learners.

·       Informs class participants of other educational opportunities available to meet their needs provided by the organization.

Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:

·       Plans/prepares course curriculum updates with ECC Certification Program Coordinator when needed per AHA guidelines.

·       Participates in hospital-initiated education programs.

·       Provides instruction or assistance with hospital safety instructor led courses; such as but not limited to, self-defense, work place safety, and work place violence prevention.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

·         High school diploma or GED.

Preferred

·         Background or certification in teaching and instruction with hands-on skill and/or simulation training.

·         Associates degree or higher.

Experience:

Required

·         Recent work experience teaching or providing education to adults and adult learners; and applying principles of adult learning theory.

Preferred

·         Certification in simulation training.

·         Experience Mentoring/Precepting work force members.

·         Course completion in public speaking or communications.

·         Experience with and solid understanding of the importance of de-escalating strategies, evasion, and self-defense tactics.

·         For AHA course instructors and other healthcare related topics instructed; it is preferred to hold a certification/license or have prior training in a medical or clinical field: Emergency Technician (ED Tech), Paramedic and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Emergency Care Assistants, Clinical Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse/LPN/LVN, and other direct patient care professions.

·         For Management of Aggressive Behavioral Training Instructors, it is preferred to hold a certification/license or prior training in law enforcement, security officer/guard, public safety, and/or public corrections or other disciplines in injury prevention, de-escalation training or protection of property damage.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:

Required

·         Current valid driver’s license. 

·         AHA BLS provider required for all instructor types, on hire.

·         AHA BLS Instructor certification for all BLS/CPR/First Aid instructors within 60 days of hire.

Preferred

·         AHA BLS Instructor certification for all BLS/CPR/First Aid instructors on hire.

·         DPSST certification for MOAB Educators,

·         Management of Aggressive Behaviors (MOAB) Provider Certification, for Instructors who teach internal workplace violence prevention courses,

·         Functions as a cooperative team member with other instructors and staff.

·         Motivates students to become involved in class when appropriate.

·         Presents a professional appearance that makes a good first impression.

·         Follows organizational guidelines for infection control in class.

·         Moves equipment to and from areas for classes.

·         Demonstrates basic skills in operation of equipment used in teaching courses, ie; audio visual presentation equipment.

·         Responds appropriately to learner’s needs for clarification or feedback.

·         Performs under flexible working hours, day and evening shifts and weekends as needed to support the instruction of course offerings.

Preferred

·         Proficient in AV presentation equipment operations and troubleshooting.

·         Bilingual Skills a plus.

Other:

Required

·         Bilingual skills are required for BLS instructors who teach the ESL and Spanish outreach courses.

·         Driving Record can have no more than:

o    One (1) accident and two (2) moving violations or

o    Two (2) accidents and one (1) moving violation or

o    No accidents and three (3) moving violations on or off the job and

o    No conviction for driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), license suspension, auto felony conviction or other serious violations within the past 36 months.
